Dr. Farooq Sulehria Speaks at Stockholm Event on Rethinking Partition Narratives

On July 13, 2025, at Filmcentrum Riks in Stockholm, scholars and artists convened for “78 Years of South Asian Partitioned Voices,” an international workshop curated by Nordic Mela. The event fostered critical dialogue across borders, challenging divisive rhetoric surrounding India-Pakistan tensions and reimagining Partition narratives through solidarity and creativity collectively.

The intellectually rich programme featured Dr. Farooq Sulehria (Beaconhouse National University, Lahore), Dr. Amrita Ghosh (University of Central Florida), Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed (Stockholm University), writer Dr. Aamir Butt, and artist Hamama Bushra, alongside Kashmiri and diasporic voices. Presentations examined literature, poetry, art, and state power, interrogating how Partition’s legacies continue shaping identities, exclusions, and cultural memory across South Asia.

Held in Stockholm’s historic Gamla Stan, the workshop concluded with a vibrant discussion, audience engagement, and musical performances. Organized by Nordic Mela, the event brought together academics, artists, filmmakers, and activists from seven countries, reaffirming solidarity, allyship, and syncretic histories as powerful alternatives to polarized and nationalist narratives surrounding the 1947 Partition.
