Associate Professor at Mariam Dawood of School of Visual Arts, BNU David Chalmers Alesworth is participating in the inaugural exhibition of the new Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada. The exhibition, titled “The Garden of Ideas: Contemporary Art from Pakistan,” is curated by Sharmini Pereira and will run from September 18, 2014, to January 18, 2015. The Aga Khan Museum is designed by the renowned Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki.

David is one of six Pakistani artists represented in the exhibition and has been commissioned to produce twelve new works, both graphic and carpet based, for this show in addition to one existing work.

David Alesworth is a well-known visual artist and landscape designer who is leading the Foundation Studies program at SVAD, BNU. Some of his most acclaimed works include mixed media site-specific installations made in Karachi in the 1990s. He worked with artists and crafts people to create truck paintings and shrine-like shipping containers that exceeded conventional binaries of high art and popular craft, modern and traditional, local and foreign. His work on Textile Interventions, which has earlier displayed at 8th Berlin Biennale 2014 in Germany, includes embroidering vintage carpet fabrics with the images of historical works of art and maps.
