Successful Conclusion of Voices of Women in Architecture Symposium at BNU

The Razia Hassan School of Architecture (RHSA) at Beaconhouse National University (BNU) recently hosted a landmark 2-day symposium, "Voices of Women in Architecture," on Thursday, January 18, and Friday, January 19, 2024, at the BNU Tarogil Campus in Lahore. The event, a collaborative effort by Women in Architecture Pakistan (WAP), Women in Architecture (UK), BNU, and the University of Engineering Technology (UET), aimed to shed light on critical issues surrounding women in the field of architecture.

The symposium delved into the challenges faced by women architects in Pakistan, the Sub-continent, and beyond, addressing stereotypical assumptions that hinder career progression and the ability to sustain long-term engagement in the profession. Topics of discussion included gender pay inequality, the perceived lack of seriousness towards women architects in the workplace and on construction sites.

Distinguished keynote speakers, Dr. Igea Troiani, head of Women in Architecture UK (WIA), and Ms. Yasmeen Lari, Pakistan's pioneering female architect and recipient of the RIBA Royal Gold Medal 2023, provided valuable insights into the multifaceted aspects of women's roles in architecture.

The symposium was graced by the presence of Heads of Departments from various Architecture Schools in Lahore, members from The Institute of Architects, Pakistan (IAP), and the Pakistan Council for Architects and Town Planners (PCATP). Engaging discussions, panel talks, and workshops enriched the academic atmosphere, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by women architects and strategies for addressing these issues.

The closing ceremony, attended by esteemed Guests of Honour, further highlighted the significance of the event. The special guests included:

  • Architect Professor, Sajida Vandal
  • Architect Professor, Yasmeen Cheema
  • Architect, Fauzia Qureshi
  • Architect, Imrana Tiwana
  • Architect, Professor. Dr. Neelam Naz
  • Deputy Commissioner of Lahore, Rafia Haider

The symposium marked a crucial step towards fostering inclusivity and gender equality within the architectural community. BNU extends gratitude to all participants, collaborators, and attendees for making the "Voices of Women in Architecture" symposium a resounding success.
