SLASS Hosted a Workshop "Researching Archives: Strategies for Source Interpretation," Featuring Dr. Kevin Greenbank

The Seeta Majeed School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (SLASS) at Beaconhouse National University (BNU) recently hosted a highly insightful workshop on "Researching Archives: Strategies for Source Interpretation," led by the esteemed Dr. Kevin Greenbank. The event, held on Thursday, December 07, 2023, at BNU, drew an engaged audience of 50+ participants from both within and outside the university.

The workshop aimed to equip attendees, including university students, early career faculty members, and independent researchers, with essential skills for navigating various archival sources, from historical and government documents to multimedia materials. The one-day session delved into crucial topics such as identifying, reading, and interpreting data, as well as effectively incorporating sources into research writing.

The comprehensive agenda included sessions on understanding sources, resources, and archives; decoding messages within textual and non-textual documents; and bridging the gap between writing and research. Particularly tailored for individuals in the Social Sciences and Humanities, the workshop welcomed advanced students engaged in research projects.

Dr. Kevin Greenbank, the distinguished workshop instructor and Vice President of Wolfson College, Cambridge, brought a wealth of experience as the former Archivist at the Centre of South Asian Studies at Cambridge University. His expertise lies in digital preservation and presentation of archive material, providing participants with valuable insights into contemporary archival practices.

The workshop not only facilitated skill development but also fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas among participants. Attendees left with a deeper understanding of effective archival research methodologies, ensuring that they are well-equipped to navigate the diverse landscape of archival materials.

SLASS encourages all participants, both from within BNU and beyond, to apply the newfound knowledge and skills acquired during this workshop to enhance their research endeavors. The success of the event reinforces BNU's commitment to providing enriching academic experiences and promoting continuous learning within the university community.
