Talk by Honi Ryan at SVAD

Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD), BNU, under its Series of Public Talks, organized a talk by Honi Ryan - “Encounters between people and place” - on October 19, 2016. The artist talked about her art and practice and briefed the audience about her ongoing project in Lahore.

Honi Ryan is an interdisciplinary artist with a nomadic social practice. Her work has intercultural concerns and deals with the present body in relationship to others and their environment. Working with long term social performance projects at the core of her practice, Ryan builds relationships as works of art by creating heightened encounters in everyday life — encounters between people and place — as a means of activating deep listening and deep presence through mindful techniques, as a living art practice.

Born in Melbourne Australia, and living and working in Berlin, Germany; Ryan has exhibited and performed in more than 11 countries across Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia over the past decade. Ryan has attended residencies and presented work internationally with both collaborative and solo projects, and in the past year her work has been supported by The Goethe Institute Barcelona, The National Trust of Australia, and Arteles Creative Centre in Finland. Ryan has presented her projects at art and philosophy conferences and in universities in the US, Germany, and Australia.

Her undergraduate degree combined Visual Art with Experiential Design between the Köln International School of Design, Germany; and Sydney University, Australia where she graduated her Bachelor of Visual Art with first class honors and was awarded the university medal in 2008. She went on to complete a Masters of Fine Art in Creative Practice with the Transart Institute in Berlin and New York in 2015. Her Master’s thesis was titled Gestures of Intent: Performance art enacting peace through presence and participation, and was highly commended by the Transart Institute.

The talk was followed by Q&A session through which the artist interacted with students and faculty of SVAD.
