Special Performance by Amie Maciszewski

Dallas based ethnomusicologist and sitar player, Amie Maciszewski visited Beaconhouse National University for a special performance on April 19, 2016. She was accompanied by Sumaira Waris, who has been hailed as Pakistan’s first female table player after her acclaimed performance at Nescafe Basement Season 4. The workshop was organized by Directorate of Student Affairs & External Relations (DSAER) under the aegis of the BNU Music Society, in association with Consulate General of the United States Lahore.

Based on the theme “Music in everyday life as Sociocultural Knowledge,” Amie Maciszewski enchanted the crowd with her soulful music. She performed Raag Bhairavi (traditionally a morning raga) and a folk music infused piece. Sumaira Waris added to the performance with her flawless tabla-playing. They also collaborated with the members of BNU Music Society for a fusion performance. At the end of the session, Director DSAER, Mr. Zaeem Yaqoob Khan thanked the guests and presented souvenirs made exclusively by students of Department of Jewellery & Accessory Design, SVAD.

About Amie Maciszewski:

Amie Maciszewski is an award-winning artist and educator. Based in Dallas, Texas, she is an ethnomusicologist and sitar player of international repute. Audiences describe Amie’s classical sitar/tabla and Indo-jazz fusion ensemble performances as “stunning” and “amazing.” Her training includes both formal academic and traditional immersion training in India (B.Mus., M.Mus., sitar performance and mentorship under the late sitarist Professor Suresh Misra in Santiniketan, West Bengal) and the U.S. (Ph.D., ethnomusicology, UTexas/Austin). Her ongoing traditional study is with two legendary gurus i.e. Grammy-nominated sarode Maestro Aashish Khan and vocal diva Padmabhushan Girija Devi.

Her brainchild, Sangeet Millennium Ensemble (Texas Top Ten award, 2008 and 2011, Austin Chronicle Polls), seamlessly blends traditional Indian melodies with jazz/world grooves, creating an ever-evolving boundary defying sound.
