• What will I learn at Graduate level?

  Psychology is a broad discipline spanning the science of the mind, brain and behavior, and is intricately linked to other social sciences including sociology and anthropology, as well as the natural and physical sciences. Individuals interested in answering questions about the brain and behavior pursue graduate study in psychology to engage in research that advances the discipline. During graduate school these individuals will learn core scientific principles of psychology, often including statistics and experimental procedures. This training often results in a research doctorate (PhD) or a master’s (MS) degree. Some individuals with MS degrees work as professionals like Clinical Psychologist, Counselors or organizational Psychologist. These individuals usually continue a career in academic or basic research, often as a professor at a college or university (usually with a PhD).

• What kind of employment opportunities are available after completing degree in Psychology?

  Graduate study in psychology prepares individuals for many career paths. Many individuals pursue graduate study in order to provide psychological services to patients and clients. These individuals often find employment as business and human resource consultants or as licensed therapists. Individuals who wish to work as therapists must complete their MS in Clinical Psychology.

• What are the Career Paths for students of IP?

  The Institute of Psychology takes pride in the strong vocational links it has established with hospitals, schools, business, industry and other professions. These partnerships help students understand and experience the realities of the modern working world, combining both theory and hands on training. This close relationship with hospitals, schools, business and the professions is reinforced through applied research and consultancy, which many of our faculty undertakes. Thus bringing together the latest developments in academic disciplines with contemporary problems and issues arising from practice. After post-graduation, students can work in almost all related areas: hospitals, private clinics, educational institutions, armed forces (educational and medical core) , counseling and guidance centers, selection boards, research organizations, civil services, business enterprises, advertising and marketing agencies, industries, social welfare agencies, reformatories, NGOs and institutions for individuals with special needs.

• Should I apply for BS (Hons) or M.Sc.?

  B.Sc. Hons. is a 4 years degree program which involves learning in core areas of psychology. To be eligible for admission to the undergraduate programs, a candidate must have an intermediate certificate [FA/F.Sc.] from a recognized institute of higher education in Pakistan with a minimum placement in the 2nd division [50% marks] or three A-Levels with an average grade of C from either a foreign or local recognized education system. A written English test followed by an interview will be taken in case of short listed candidates. Whereas MSc is a 2 years degree program comprising of 4 semester and it is intended for these students who have completed their 2 years Bachelor with psychology as major subjects. To be eligible for admission to the M.Sc. in School Psychology, a candidate must have good academic record with minimum 2nd division in B.A / B.Sc. in Psychology or Applied Psychology from a well-established and respectable university. A written English test followed by an interview will be taken in case of short listed candidates.

• Should I apply for MS or M.Phil program in Psychology?

  Both program require a B.Sc. (Hons.) 4 year degree in psychology or MA/M.Sc. (2 year degree). The MS program provides intensive professional training to facilitate students to become good clinical professionals. Whereas M.Phil. program provides intensive research training to facilitate student in applied areas of research. After completing M.Phil., students can join different fields of psychology.

• I have not studied psychology at A level/Intermediate level, can I still apply for undergraduate program in Psychology?

  Yes, you can apply for undergraduate program and you will have to pass a written test to qualify for program.

• Would I practice as a Psychologist or a Psychiatrist after completing the degree at Institute of Psychology?

  After the degree programs at Institute of Psychology, you will be called a psychologist. The two professions and the services provided by each profession differ in terms of content and scope. Psychologists usually have a graduate or doctoral degree in Psychology while psychiatrists are physicians with a degree in medicine such as MBBS who have specialized in the field of Psychiatry. Psychologists deal with the way the mind works and can specialize in a number of areas, such as mental health and educational and occupational psychology while psychiatrists only deal with mental disorders and their diagnosis, management and prevention.
