Yasmeen Aftab Ali, a member of Faculty at the School of Media and Mass Communication (SMC), Beaconhouse National University has been nominated as a member of the task force for the Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting of the National Assembly of Pakistan to review, suggest amendments and redraft new media laws for Pakistan.
Yasmeen Aftab Ali is a communication professional, lawyer, academic and political analyst. She has authored a book titled ‘A Comparative Analysis of Media & Media Laws in Pakistan’ which has been accepted as a Reference Book on the subject by Harvard University Law Library. She writes a weekly column for ‘Pakistan Today’ and also contributes to Express Tribune. Yasmeen’s columns and articles have been published in The Nation, Asia Times and various other national and international publications. She has been a part of BNU since 2004, teaching courses of Media & Media Laws in Pakistan, Media in Democratic Society, and Principles of Advertising.
Department of Liberal Arts under its Distinguished Lecture Series organized a Talk by Dr. Mohammad Waseem, Professor of Political Science, School of Social Sciences, LUMS on the topic, “The Islamabad Dharna: Political Anthropology of an Event”. Present on the talk were Mr. Shahid Hafiz Kardar, Vice Chancellor BNU; Dr. Tariq Rehman, Dean Seeta Majeed School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences & School of Education; Mr. Ijaz Hussain, Assistant Professor Economics and Mr. Shehzad Amjad, Lecturer DLA.
Dr. Muhammad Waseem, in his talk, explored the dialectic between the Islamabad Dharna (sit-in) and the political system discovering connections between plan and action, contenders for power and strategies of action. He explained in detail the PTI Manifesto, Imran Khan’s discourse, Tahir-ul-Qadri phenomenon, possibilities of army’s intervention and political fallout following the sit-in protest. The lecture was followed by question and answer session.
Department of Economics, under its Distinguished Lecture Series, arranged a talk by Mr. Shahid Najam on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 on the topic "Human Development."
Mr. Najam has Master’s Degrees in LLM, Public Policy and Rural Development from London. He has, to his credit, experience of more than 39 years (18 years with the Government of Pakistan and more than 21 years with UN System) in policy and strategy formulation; development planning and programming ; formulation, implementation and monitoring of large scale projects and work plans; resource mobilization and management; disaster management and relief operations.
School of Education, Beaconhouse National University organized a talk by Dr. Tariq Rahman on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 under its Distinguished Lecture Series. The topic of his talk was "What was Jinnah's Pakistan? And what did we do to it?."
In his talk, Dr. Tariq Rahman highlighted the Jinnah’s vision for Pakistan through the excerpts of his speeches and letters. He discussed how our policy makers, political leaders and we as a nation have distorted that image over the years. He pointed at some of the policies that have harmed our country much more than the alleged inefficiency of our rulers. He also talked about some historical events that have resulted in the distortion of Jinnah’s vision of Pakistan. The talk was attended by students, faculty and staff of BNU. Vice Chancellor Mr. Shahid Hafiz Kardar was the chief guest on the occasion.
School of Education, Beaconhouse National University, under the auspices of Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), organized a seminar featuring distinguished international scholars; Dr. Anne Aly from Australia and Mr. Shahab Enam Khan from Bangladesh. The seminar was held on October 23, 2014. The session was chaired by Dr. Mehdi Hassan who is the Dean School of Media and Mass Communication (SMC) at the Beaconhouse National University. The Registrar Ms. Farzana Shahid welcomed the guests on behalf of the institution and the Vice Chancellor BNU, Mr. Shahid Hafiz Kardar.
The Inaugural Ceremony of BNU Plan 9 Entrepreneurial Society was held on 28th of October, 2014 at BNU Tarogil Campus. The ceremony was graced by Vice Chancellor BNU, Mr. Shahid Hafiz Kardar; Dean School of Computer and Information Technology (SCIT), Dr. Khaver Zia; Dean Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design, Prof. Salima Hashmi; and Registrar BNU, Mrs. Farzana Shahid. Mr. Nabeel A. Qadeer, Joint Director (Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development) at Plan9 and Mr. Uzair Shahid, Programme Manager at Plan9 were also present on the occasion. Professor Zubair Anwar from SCIT was the stage secretary for the event. The ceremony was attended by a large number of BNU students, faculty and staff.
The students of Razia Hassan School of Architecture (SA) participated at the jamboree awards held in May 2014. The student jamboree was inspired from the theme of IAPEX 14 (Lahore Transforming into a Mega City) and aimed at learning from the experiences of old settlements with in our towns and cities. The participants explored and investigated old settlements with in their towns and cities and prepared presentations which could be helpful in terms of dealing with issues of an evolving mega city.
Dr. Fariha Tariq, Assistant Professor at Razia Hassan School of Architecture (SA), BNU presented a HEC sponsored paper, "Provision of Participatory Shelter Facilities in Adverse Environments: A case study of Lahore, Pakistan" at Disaster Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Sustainable Reconstruction Conference held at University of Massachusetts Boston, USA on 8-9 May, 2014. She also presented a poster presentation on the topic "Creating Inclusive Slum Design Through Architecture Intervention" at EDRA45 Building with Change, a conference organized by environmental design research association in New Orleans, USA from 28-30 May, 2014.
The naming ceremony of the Beaconhouse National University’s School of Architecture was held on April 13, 2014 at BNU Tarogil Campus. The School of Architecture has been named after the late mother of Dr. Parvez Hassan, who is a renowned lawyer, environmentalist and philanthropist. He is a member of the Board of Directors, Beaconhouse National University Foundation and the Board of Governors, BNU.
Mr. Imran Khan, Founding Chairman, Board of Governors of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Chancellor of University of Bradford, Founder Namal College Mianwali, Former Captain of Pakistan Cricket Team, a Sitting Parliamentarian and the Chairman, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest.
Dr. Ruhi Khalid, Director, Institute of Psychology at Beaconhouse National University chaired the scientific session at International Conference on Educational Psychology arranged by National Institute of Psychology, Quaid-i- Azam University, Islamabad on 13th November, 2014. The theme of the session was “Students and School Environment “and included research papers from eminent universities all over Pakistan. The conference was attended by leading psychologists, educationists, researchers and students from all over the world.
