Crises Intervention Meeting held at Mayo Hospital
Task force formed by the Health department of Punjab invited professionals from the field of mental health on 6th of January, 2015 to give suggestions regarding measures that can be adopted to deal with the present instable situation of the country. Dr Ruhi Khalid, Director Institute of Psychology and Amna Affan Butt, Assistant Professor, represented BNU at Department of Psychiatry, Mayo Hospital, Lahore. The main purpose of this meeting was to prepare crisis intervention plan for school children after the tragic Peshawar Incident which shook the whole nation. Some of the important decisions taken in the meeting included module development for training mental health professionals, preparing a list of crisis intervention experts and increasing human resource to effectively deal with future catastrophes. Another meeting will be called to evaluate the progress made to accomplish the aforementioned goals.
Associate Professor at Mariam Dawood of School of Visual Arts, BNU David Chalmers Alesworth is participating in the inaugural exhibition of the new Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada. The exhibition, titled “The Garden of Ideas: Contemporary Art from Pakistan,” is curated by Sharmini Pereira and will run from September 18, 2014, to January 18, 2015. The Aga Khan Museum is designed by the renowned Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki.
Razia Latif, a faculty member at Razia Hassan School of Architecture (RHSA), BNU presented a paper, co-authored by RHSA Faculty members Haseeb Amjad, Zara Amjad, and Dean Dr. Gulzar Haider at ARCHDESIGN 14: Architectural Design Conference held on May 8-9 at Istanbul, Turkey.
Governor Punjab Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar has given Best Teacher Award to Prof. Dr. Taimur ul Hassan of SMC. The award has been instituted by Nai Baat Newspaper Organization to honor individuals who have made valuable contribution to their respective fields.
Dr. Tariq Rahman has recently delivered a number of special lectures, both nationally and internationally. On August 24 Aug 2014, he delivered a lecture at the 3rd Conference of the International Society for the Linguistics of English at University of Zurich, Switzerland on the topic ‘Modernization of Names in Pakistan.’ Later, he attended Distinguished Lectures at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) on September 24, 2014 and spoke on the topic ‘The Economic and Political Consequences of Language Policies and Practices: the case of North India and Pakistan.’
Dr. Ummad Mazhar’s new publication, Corruption across Government Occupations: Cross-National Survey Evidence, has been published by the Journal of International Development (of Wiley International). The paper is co-authored with Rajeev K GOEL (Professor, Department of Economics, Illinois State University, USA) and Michael A NELSON (Professor and Chair, Department of Economics, University of Akron, USA). Director Institute of Psychology (IP), Dr. Ruhi Khalid along with a few faculty members participated in the 5th International Conference on Educational Psychology held at National Institute of Psychology, Islamabad on 13th November, 2014. Dr. Ruhi Khalid chaired a scientific session on the theme of “Students and School Environment “at the conference. She also presented a paper along with Dr. Farhat Nadeem, Assistant Professor IP. The title of the paper was “Factors Contributing to Good Grades in Schools”. Ms. Amna Affan Butt and Ms. Abia Nazim from Institute of Psychology also presented two research posters at the conference.
Alizeb Raees, a final year student of Theater, Film & Television Department at Beaconhouse National University was invited to attend the International Development Youth Forum in Japan, from March 9-16, 2014.
The International Development Youth Forum is an annual forum where young leaders from all around the world gather to find solutions for international developmental issues though creativity and innovation. Alizeb was among the 50 selected participants out of 800 applicants who got selected for this forum. He received a scholarship on the basis of his ideas and vision for addressing development related issues.
During his seven days visit in Japan, Alizeb presented his final group project at Meiji University in front of veterans of innovative development. This is not the first time that Alizeb has received international exposure on the basis of his talent. The young filmmaker has previously represented BNU at London International Documentary Festival and Offscreen Expeditions in UK and CinemadaMare in Italy.
Professor and Dean School of Education, Dr. Tariq Rahman has been given the charge of Dean, Seeta Majeed School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Beaconhouse National University. Dr. Tariq Rahman will also hold charge as Acting Dean, School of Education.
The Department of Theatre, Film and Television (TFT) at School of Media and Communications (SMC), BNU organized film screening of its graduating batch on Saturday, 6 December 2014 at Alhamra Arts Council, Lahore. Twelve short films and documentaries were screened at the event which was well-attended by BNU students, faculty and general film enthusiasts.
Vice Chancellor BNU, Mr. Shahid Hafiz Kardar was the chief guest on the occasion. While addressing the audience, he appreciated the work of TFT students and said that we need young filmmakers who can raise different issues concerning the society. Head of Department of Theatre, Film and Television, Dr. Asghar Nadeem Syed also praised the effort of students and said that they have made BNU proud by making such wonderful films. Also present on the occasion were actress, playwright and director of social theatre Madeeha Gauhar; award-winner Pakistani journalist, playwright, screen writer, theatre and television director and a human rights activist Shahid Nadeem; filmmaker Bilal Lashari and other prominent personalities from the world of films, theater and television.
