Surangla Punjab: MDSVAD Curates Heritage & Crafts Exhibition by UNESCO Pakistan, under the Punjab Tourism for Economic Growth Project at PILAC

UNESCO organized a 3-day exhibition, “A Tapestry of Mysticism, Stories & Dreams of Surangla Punjab” at Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture (PILAC), Hafeez Kardar Road, Gulberg III, Lahore from Friday November 12 until Sunday, November 14, 2021.

The exhibition was curated by the Department of Textile, Fashion and Accessories, Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts and Design, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore for UNESCO Pakistan with funding from Punjab Tourism for Economic Growth Project (PTEGP).

This exhibition featured the tangible and intangible cultural heritage and practices by artisans hailing from the regions of Central Punjab; Eminabad, Gujranwala, Lahore, Farooqabad, Sheikhupura and South Punjab; Bahawalpur, Multan ad Uch.

The cultural and creative industries play an important role in the livelihoods of artisans and local communities around the heritage sites of Gurdwara Rohri Sahib, Gurdawara Chaki Sahib, Gurdwara Sacha Sauda, Ranjit Singh Haveli, Waris Shah Tomb, Lahore Museum, Abbasi Complex, Noor Mahal and Bibi Jawindi Tomb complex Uch Sharif.

The objective of the exhibition was the promotion of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Central and South Punjab. Preceding the exhibition, trainings were conducted for the artisans, craftsperson and micro-entrepreneurs focusing on design aesthetic, product development, storytelling and regional ownership, digital marketing through social media platforms and e-commerce as well as life skills in personal development, communication, presentation and hygiene.

The exhibition was displayed at the PILAC gallery, and was being set up for the encouragement of cultural heritage and development of the micro-entrepreneurs and artisans who are the practitioners of traditional crafts linked to the selected religious and heritage sites in Punjab.
