Abdul Sattar Edhi – The modern incarnation of a Pacifist Sufi | a Routledge series chapter by Dr. Tahir Kamran

Dr. Tahir Kamran, Professor and Head of Liberal Arts Department-SLASS contributed a chapter in The Dynamics of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary South Asia, a Routledge New Horizons in South Asian Studies volume published in 2021.

The piece titled “Abdul Sattar Edhi – The modern incarnation of a Pacifist Sufi” traces the beginnings and evolution of Abdul Sattar Edhi, his relative inspirations which besides drawing from a seminal event of childhood suffering, drew varied influences from motley sources of Islam, socialism and humanism . Also as part of an original insight, Dr. Tahir compares the likeness of Edhi to a Sufi dervish and dissects and posits the Edhi enterprise as an “evolved form of the medieval dargah”.
