Ghulam Mohammad, a graduate and a faculty member at Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts & Design (SVAD), has won the Jameel Art Prize 4, the biennial award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition. He won the award for his five works of paper collage, four Untitled and one with the title Gunjaan (2014). Ghulam Mohammad’s award winning work in on display now at Pera Museum, Istanbul, Turkey.
Organized by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), in partnership with Art Jameel, the Jameel Prize aims to develop cultural links around the world and promote cultural understanding. For the 4th edition of the prestigious prize, leading international curators, designers, artists and cultural figures were invited to nominate applicants to the prize, and over 280 nominations were received. Eleven artists were shortlisted for the award including Ghulam Mohammad and former faculty member of SVAD, David Chalmers Alesworth. The winner was announced on June 07, 2016. Ayşe and Ece Ege, founders of Turkish fashion label Dice Kayek and winners of Jameel Prize 3, presented Ghulam Mohammad with the Prize at a ceremony at the Pera Museum where his exhibition opened the next day. The exhibition will run till 14 August, 2016 before going on international tour.
