This year will be remembered as a significant one for SVAD – through a series of discussions to envisage the pedagogical needs of a changing time, our faculty has once again taken the lead in foreseeing the future of art and design education in the 21st century.
This constant introspection, the hallmark of our ethos, has led to the collective realization that the nature of learning is changing with a blurring of boundaries between disciplines, and that art and design professionals will soon require new adaptive tools. To meet this anticipated objective, it was essential that we moved away from the traditional method of prescribed curriculum, which only encourages passive learning. Consequently, our existing programmes have been restructured to give more agency to our faculty and students, activating the academic space more by creating decision-makers and problem-solvers.
Revisions to our pedagogical goals have also necessitated the introduction of a new undergraduate programme in Fall 2019. We are very excited to offer the new Bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Expanded Design and Art. The first of its kind to be offered in Pakistan, this programme not only recognizes inter-disciplinarity across fields of art and design, but also encourages students to investigate overlaps with sciences and humanities. We owe this pioneering degree to our unique
context within the larger umbrella of BNU and our access to a plethora of courses offered across its several schools. Students enrolling in this degree will effectively design their own programmes, choosing courses based on their personalized research objectives.
Our focus on alternative methods of knowledge dissemination is evident from upcoming events like the Design Summit 2020 and ongoing exercises like the annual Open Day welcoming visitors to witness art-making on campus. We hope to usher in the academic year 2019-2020 by continuing our efforts to expand and surpass creative boundaries even further.
