Introduction

The vision of the School of Computer and Information Technology (SCIT) is to become the leading national school in business computing and software engineering education.

To this end, the School places special emphasis on all areas which have an impact on the provision of quality education namely; quality of intake, curriculum development, selection of faculty, teaching methodology, examination system and co-curricular activities.

The School is conscious of the fast changing market requirements, which emanate from new systems and technologies. In particular, the Internet and mobile technologies have completely changed the working of the business and commercial world. The School has introduced new programs and updated existing ones in response to these changing needs. For instance, two new programs have been introduced from the current academic year. First; a Master program titled MS in Business Information Technology for advanced studies in business IT. Second, a joint program with the Department of Economics, School of Social Sciences named BSc (Hons) in Economics and Business IT.

Further, the School is already conducting a successful BSc (Hons) Evening program to cater to the needs of working students. The curriculum of the evening program is exactly the same as that of the morning program. It has an extended duration due to lower workload in comparison to the morning program. Currently only the Management and Business Computing (MBC) and Software Engineering (SE) programs are offered in the evening mode. To facilitate working students, the Evening program has a lower fee which is payable on monthly basis.

By virtue of being positioned in a liberal arts university, the School of IT offers its students an opportunity to develop a well rounded academic profile. Students enrolled with the School of IT can take up any number of electives from a diverse suite of courses which are offered by the other six schools of the University.

The School offers five programs of study, as enumerated below.

1. MS in Business Information Technology (MBIT) **

2.  BSc (Hons) in Management and Business Computing (MBC) *

3.  BSc (Hons) in Finance and Business Computing  (FBC)

4.  BSc (Hons) in Software Engineering (SE) *

5.  BSc (Hons) in Economics and Business IT (EBIT) **

* Also offered as an Evening program       ** New

The teaching-learning model followed by School of IT greatly emphasizes practical work to enforce understanding of theoretical concepts. To achieve this objective, the lab is designated as an integral part of the learning environment.

Each bachelor degree program is built up around five streams of study. In each semester, students take up one course from each stream to complete their study suite. As they progress along to higher semesters, they are offered higher level courses from these streams. In the concluding semester, elective courses are available. Each bachelor program has two mandatory final year projects, which provide students with an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned in their initial years.

The MS in Business Information Technology program is an advanced degree, designed to build up a solid understanding for developing effective business solutions in the corporate and business world.
