The School of Education (SE) at the Beaconhouse National University founded in 2005 was established in response to the deeply felt need in Pakistan and the region for improvement in quality of teacher education. It has become one of the leading institutions for teacher education in Pakistan. Realizing the potential of education for transforming lives, the School of Education is committed to making a positive contribution to the development of individuals, institutions and society.

The School caters to both in-service and pre-service professionals from both public and private sector institutions. Through the courses and programs, the School reaches a diverse population of trainees from different education sectors and levels.

All the programmes offered at the School of Education are research-intensive and are based on the philosophy that teacher educators must be engaged in a continual process of inquiry. They are designed keeping in view the challenges of change that individuals, institutions and societies are facing and aim at preparing its students as effective agents of change. The teaching and assessment techniques used by the School encourage experiential learning and problem-solving skills. The research-led courses offered at SE encourage students to gain insights from research in pedagogy to develop skills and values needed for imparting quality education. Keeping these strengths in view, the School of Education at Beconhouse National University envisions the following standards of excellence for the next decade so:

The Birth of the Knowledge-Revolution by Dr. Tariq Rahman

Dr Tariq Rahman, Dean School of Education, gave a talk on “The Birth of the Knowledge-Revolution” on December 20, 2013 at BNU Tarogil Campus. The talk was arranged as part of BNU 10th anniversary celebrations. The lecture traced out the birth of modernity, one major feature of which is the exponential increase in the knowledge we witness on a daily basis. Dr Rahman said that there was no simple explanation for this phenomenon; however, the talk discussed some factors which have led to it. Read More>>

School of Education, Beaconhouse National University has arranged a special presentation on "The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)” on Wednesday, April 02, 2014 by Ms. Sahar Saeed, researcher and policy analyst, ASER Pakistan. ASER is the largest citizen led household based initiative, that aims to fill a gap in learning outcomes and provide reliable estimates on the schooling status of children residing in the rural and few urban districts of Pakistan. Dr. Tariq Rahman Awarded the Doctor of Letters by the University of Sheffield

Dr. Tariq Rahman, Dean of School of Education, Beaconhouse National University has been awarded a D. Litt (Doctor of Letters) degree by the University of Sheffield in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a researcher, scholar and author. Two years ago, Dr. Tariq Rahman was asked by the University of Sheffield, U.K. to submit his published work for the examination of a higher doctorate. The examiners have now recommended him for D.Litt at the Research and Innovation services of University of Sheffield. Read More>>


Sitara-i-Imtiaz for Dr. Tariq Rahman, Dean of School of Education

Dr. Tariq Rahman, Dean of School of Education at Beaconhouse National University has received Sitara-i-Imtiaz in recognition of his contributions in the field of Literature. Conferment of Sitara-i-Imtiaz for Dr. Rahman was approved by the President of Pakistan in 2013 and the award was conferred on him on the occasion of Pakistan Day (23rd March 2014). Read More>>

Bestival 2014, held at Beaconhouse National University from 27th February till 2nd March, 2014, attracted a record-breaking number of participants of up to 500 students, the most in the history of Bestival. Talk on "The Partition of the Punjab" by Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed at the School of Education

Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed is an eminent scholar and political scientist with expertise on South Asian Studies. He is a Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Stockholm University, Honorary Senior Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies at the National University of Singapore, and a visiting Professor at LUMS. Shahid Hafiz Kardar appointed BNU’s Vice Chancellor

Mr. Shahid Hafiz Kardar has succeeded Mr. Sartaj Aziz as the 2nd Vice Chancellor of Beaconhouse National University (BNU). Shahid has been a member of Board of Governors at BNU and has been associated with university right from its inception. Mrs. Nasreen Mahmud Kasuri in her message on his  appointment as the new Vice Chancellor said, "When we were looking to  constitute a Board for the university, we wanted people who had impeccable  integrity and were non-controversial besides other attributes. Professor and Dean Dr. Tariq Rahman

Tariq Rahman Ph.D is presently Dean, School of Education at the Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. He is also HEC Distinguished National Professor and Professor Emeritus at the National Institute of Pakistan Studies, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad for life. From June 2007 till June 2011 he was also the Director of NIPS. He is a highly published scholar with over 99 articles in scholarly journals; 18 books; 22 entries in encyclopedias and reference books; 33 contributions to books and several book reviews. His most famous book Language and Politics in Pakistan, published by Oxford (Pakistan) in 1996, remains in print and has been published by Orient Blackswan in India. His history of language-learning among the Muslims of South Asia, Language, Ideology and Power (OUP 2002), remains a landmark in the field and has also been published by the same Indian publisher in 2008. One of his books, Denizens of Alien Worlds (OUP 2004), connects the medium of instruction with world view, poverty and politics in Pakistan. His latest book From Hindi to Urdu: A Social and Political History is a social and political history of Urdu and has been published simultaneously by Oxford (Pakistan) and Orient (India) in 2011.

Dr. Rahman has been a guest professor in Denmark and Spain. He has been a Fulbright research scholar (1995-96) at U. T. Austin. He was also the first incumbent of the Pakistan Chair at U.C Berkeley (2004-05). He has been a research fellow at the Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies and the South Asia Institute at the University of Heidelberg. He has been given several awards: the Presidential Pride of Performance (1994), HEC lifetime achievement award and the highly prestigious Humboldt Research Award (2012) from Germany, and was conferred Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 2013. In 2014 his total research work was examined by the University of Sheffield, U.K which awarded him D. Litt (Doctor of Letters) for higher achievements. He has lectured or contributed conference papers in the U. K.— where he obtained his M. A and Ph. D—as well as the U. S. A, Germany, France, China, Korea, India and Nepal. He also contributes columns and book reviews to the English language press in Pakistan. . View CV
