Introduction
The renaissance tradition of master artist-craftsman-builder has evolved into distinct pursuits of visual artists, architects, engineers, and industry dependent designers. The boundaries among various disciplines have hardened and are jealously guarded by professional bodies. Their respective education programs have become increasingly isolated and self-serving. There is a need to attract the diverse and disparate design sensibilities towards a shared objective of achieving interior environments of inspired quality. To this end the Beaconhouse National University is offering a one year programme of studies towards a Diploma in the art of Art & Design of Interiors . Its primary aim is to help architects, designers, visual artists and quality seeking educated citizens to come together in a studio environment. Teaching methods will combine studio projects, specialized case study inputs and carefully designed study tours. The programme aims to raise the quality of work in specific related areas e.g furniture design, textiles and related fiber arts in interiors, artificial lighting, adaptive reuse of buildings, new and refurbished museum and exhibition spaces.

WHATS IS “ART & DSIGN OF INTERIORS”?

Art & Design of Interiors comprises the following ideas that help it make a creative link between professional practice of architecture and the artistic and holistic (ideational, perceptual, emotional) quality of the experienced interiors: More specifically the following ideas will be brought into the realm of the design and the practice through the studio projects, teaching modules, case studies and site visits
  1. Inside/ Outside. Coordinated Relationship between the enclosing structure of a building and interior instillations, furnishings and finishes

  2. Hierarchy of Primary Dimensions. Interiors as arrangements of one (lines), two (surfaces), three-dimensional (furniture) objects as well as visual perceptions and tactile experiences that are mutually supportive and purposefully composed with special attention to size and scale

  3. Light, Color and Texture as primary media as well as the sculpting tools in the shaping of Interiors and orchestration of the interior experiences

  4. Furnishings as extensions of the immovable context (walls, floors) and the definers of fluid versus frozen spaces in Interiors . Furnishings as definers of the useful void for social encounters, for work stations and for essential movements among different spaces

  5. Visual and Performing Arts. Interiors as display space and a context for paintings, sculpture. The role of interiors as staging environment as well as a setup for listening and watching of performing arts. Efficient performance of Interiors with respect to time and motion, sound and vibrations, heat, comfort and safety

  6. Interior and Art. The challenge of bringing and instilling art into the interiors. Interiors as three dimensional art in its own right
