Lahore's rich cultural and literary milieu of teaching, scholarship and creative writing forms the ideal background for the School of Liberal Arts which comprises of three Departments offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses.  

Students entering university for the first time may select either the BA (Hons) Liberal Arts programme offered by the Department of Literatures and Languages, pursue a professional BA (Hons.) degree at the Department of Theatre, Film and TV Studies or read for an MA Literature in English or an MA (Applied Linguistics) degree at the Department of English Literature and Language.


While the School of Liberal Arts actively encourages the development of a diverse and talented student community committed to the arts of critical and creative writing and reading; learners have the option of majoring in any of the following streams:

A) At the graduate level , students may opt for an MA degree in:
  1. Literature in English
  2. Applied Linguistics
     
B) At the undergraduate level, SLA offers a professional eight semester course leading to a BA (Hons.) degree with specialization in:
  1. Theatre
  2. Film/ TV Studies
C) Or students may opt for a BA (Hons.) Liberal Arts degree with specialization in:
  1. English Literature
  2. French
  3. Cultural Studies
BNU is the first institution in Pakistan to offer a comprehensive professional program in the area of the performing arts which introduces students to new and innovative modes of studying literary, dramatic and technical production in cultural studies, theatre, TV and film.
     
In addition to mainstream programmes leading to the award of a degree, SLA offers the following evening courses:
  1. Diploma in English Language
  2. Certificate in Business English
 
The School of Liberal Arts is particularly sensitive to the cultural needs of students entering higher education. Among the choice of diverse and dynamic options available to students, SLA offers mandatory subjects such as English and Communication Skills, Pakistan Studies, Islamic Studies, and Computer Literacy.

PROGRAMMES AT SLA
Graduate programmes at SLA encourage students to think and write critically – skills that can be applied to a wide range of career choices beyond the span of a postgraduate degree. Graduate students for Literature have the option of specializing in one of three streams.

These specialization streams are structured to inculcate literary appreciation and more importantly, to empower students to practically critique and manipulate English as a powerful medium of expression.
In addition to the graduate programmes in English Literature, the Department offers a wide variety of innovative literature courses at the BA (Hons.) level.

 
Admission Pre requisites:
2. BA/Bsc from a recognized institution in Pakistan or equivalent
3. Written Test/Interview for short listed candidates
 
Degree Requirements:

The School of Liberal Arts defines its
MA degrees in terms of 72 credits earned over four semesters.
and BA (Hons) degrees in terms of 130 credits earned over eight academic semesters.


The minimum requirement for the award of a degree is:
MA CGPA equivalent to B Grade (3.0)
BA (Hons.) CGPA equivalent to C Grade (2.0)

Undergraduate students with Advanced Standing ( 3.50 cgpa) may be permitted to proceed to a post graduate degree earned within two semesters (one year) as opposed to the usual four semesters (two years) with the approval of the Dean provided they have earned their undergraduate degree at BNU.
The duration of each semester at BNU is 16-17 weeks inclusive of examinations.
