1. CHILDREN’S LITERATURE    I

THE DNA OF FAIRY TALES: ORIGIN AND MEANING

THE PROGRAMME IS OFFERED SUBJECT TO A MINIMUM ENROLMENT OF 25 STUDENTS

Fairy tales belong to an oral tradition handed down from generation to generation and have only relatively recently been written down.  In view of the fact that Persian and Hindu, Celtic, Teutonic and Nordic mythologies and sacred texts appear to share eternal and universal  themes; scholars of comparative philology and mythology agree that there may be a common source.

The School of Liberal Arts programme is offered as a summer course in two parts. The present Summer 2009, introductory course is an attempt to retrace the ‘DNA’ of fantasy stories: ‘the smaller cousins of the great myths’ in a seminar format which is reading intensive. The course draws heavily on archetypal story-telling across languages. Stories such as Daastan Amir Hamza,  1001 Arabian Nights, Greek and Hindu mythology jostle for attention along with more contemporary texts such as the Harry Potter series.

An introductory module in Cognitive Development which incorporates Piaget’s theory of early learning rounds off the first part of the programme.

Ideally suited to the needs of Primary and Secondary English teachers; literature students and parents; the programme is taught by senior academics for the award of a Certificate.

SLA will offer the second part of the programme in Summer 2010. Participants will be eligible for the award of a Diploma on successful completion of both parts.

The Department of Literatures and Languages plans to expand the Certificate and Diploma courses into a Major offered at the post graduate level by 2011.

2. CREATIVE WRITING –URDU

THE PROGRAMME IS OFFERED SUBJECT TO A MINIMUM ENROLMENT OF 10 STUDENTS

A liberal arts education would be incomplete without an emphasis on languages.

As such, the School of Liberal Arts encourages students to attain proficiency in several languages through courses designed to bridge linguistic and cultural differences.

From seminal to contemporary texts, participants are introduced to some of the best writing in the sub continent. One of the most popular summer programmes in recent years, the Creative Writing in Urdu workshop taught as a hands-on project based course, has resulted in a number of students being encouraged to write novellas, short stories and screen plays.
